Here we have the Premier League programme covers for the weekend of 1st and 2nd February 2020.
The issue that catches the eye most this weekend is the Liverpool programme for the visit of Southampton. The cover of the programme shows the legendary figure of Bob Paisley, who is the subject of a new statue that was unveiled at Anfield last week. Like the statue, the image on the programme cover shows Paisley helping an injured Emlyn Hughes from the field in a match from 1968. This article on the Liverpool website contains more information about the creation of the statue. Paisley signed for Liverpool as a player in 1939, starting an association with the club that lasted until his retirement from the board of directors in 1992. Paisley is of course regarded as one of the best managers the game has ever seen, winning six league titles and three European Cups with Liverpool, with 20 trophies in total between 1974 and 1983.
Elsewhere, the Bournemouth programme for the visit of Aston Villa showed Cherries’ captain Simon Francis, taking part in a photo-shoot at Bournemouth Aviation Museum, wearing a retro Bournemouth shirt from the late 1980s.
